What is EAP?
"
Employee Assistance is the work organization's resource to enhance employee
and workplace effectiveness through prevention, identification and resolution
of personal and productivity issues." - Employee Assistance Professionals
Association
Employee Assistance Programs are your organization's best resource for
enhancing employee and workplace effectiveness through prevention, identification
and resolution of personal and productivity issues. Over 82% of companies
with 500+ employees have an EAP, and 62% of business owners with just 25
or more employees utilize an EAP for their workplace.
In fact, EAP’s are the single most effective mechanism for recovering
the job performance and career of employees who develop substance abuse
drug problems, providing a 70% return to effective work performance.
An effective EAP is a key workplace benefit, not an insurance add-on. Don’t
be fooled by healthcare sellers or brokers who offer a weak counseling benefit
or 1-800 referral service and call it an EAP. It may be cheap to buy, but
poor service costs more in the long run.

How Much Does It Cost?
There is NO cost to the employee for the EAP services themselves. Your
company has prepaid the initial assessment and EAP-provided counseling for
you and your eligible family members. If you and your EAP counselor agree
that further assistance is needed, you may be referred to other service
providers (i.e. longer term counseling or treatment) that may be covered
by your health insurance. If needed services are not covered by insurance,
your EAP counselor will work with you to find affordable options.

FAQ’s
What types of problems are covered by the EAP?
Our professional EAP counselors provide assistance with substance abuse,
family issues, financial problems, addictions, relationship issues, depression,
work-related concerns, child and elder care issues and other personal concerns.
How many EAP visits are available to me?
The EAP provides up to 3-8 visits (depending on the service selected
by your company) for clients with concerns that can be RESOLVED within that
period. You and your EAP counselor will make that decision together.
Generally, 70% of all employees/family members seen in the EAP receive
all the counseling they need during these visits.
While every situation is different, common problems that are usually
resolved in 6 visits or less include: some relationship issues, adjustment
problems, work stress, some family conflicts, some post traumatic stress
experiences and mild depressed moods.
Problems that are NOT appropriate for short-term intervention include:
drug and alcohol issues, serious depression, abuse, assault issues, domestic
violence problems and family of origin issues.
What if I need services beyond the EAP?
Should you need assistance beyond the EAP, your EAP counselor will facilitate
a referral to a self-help group, a behavioral health professional, an attorney,
physician, treatment center or other resource. Once referred, the employee
is financially responsible for the cost of these services. Our EAP counselor
will also assist you with utilizing your insurance plan when necessary.
Does my insurance company have access to EAP records?
NO. When your company contracted with Jorgensen/Brooks for a full-service
EAP, they purchased a free-standing EAP that is SEPARATE from any insurance
plan. This is an extra safeguard for you, because no insurance company
has access to your EAP information.
How many times can I use EAP?
Jorgensen/Brooks EAP provides up to 3-8 sessions per assessed problem.
If you experience multiple problems within a year, we encourage you to call
again. However, it is important to note that EAP is NOT a substitute for
seeking ongoing professional help, nor a substitute for court-oredered treatment.
Occasionally people will contact EAP soon after using their allotted visits
and ask for a "new" set of visits for the same (or related) problem.
If you re-contact EAP with a new problem, we'll be happy to refer you for additional
help. But if you're contacting EAP with the same problem and requesting additional
assistance, EAP is going to help you by pursuing options outside the EAP program.
How do you define "family member" or "dependent"?
Someone who is a legal dependent or significant other to the employee and/or
living in the same household. If you are not sure whether someone is covered
by the program, please call. We frequently serve dependent parents in the home,
as well as significant life partners.
What is a “Self Referral”?
When you contact the EAP on your own for assistance, for a referral, or for
any personal reason, this is a "self-referral." All confidentiality
regulations are applied.
What is a "Supervisory Referral"?
If you meet with your supervisor because of a job performance concern (attendance,
accidents, performance, etc.), your supervisor may suggest a referral to the
EAP. Acceptance or refusal is your choice. If your job performance problem
is related to a personal problem, the EAP may help you resolve the personal
problem without anyone at work knowing about it. Ideally, resolving the personal
problem will help resolve the job performance concerns. Even with a supervisory
referral, all confidentiality regulations still apply.
What information will be requested when I call?
Our call center person will ask you for your employer, your name, telephone
number, location, and where you would like to see an EAP counselor. If more
than one counselor is available in your area, you will be able to select
your preference. You will then be connected directly to that counselor to
schedule your appointment.
