CHOOSING THE
RIGHT EAP
So, how do you choose the right EAP for your company?
- An effective EAP is a key workplace benefit, not an insurance add-on.
Don’t be fooled by healthcare sellers or brokers who offer a
weak counseling benefit or 1-800 referral service and call it an EAP.
It may be cheap to buy, but poor service costs more in the long run.
- Make certain, for example, that your company’s EAP providers
are CEAP’s – certified employee assistance professionals
- trained to handle onsite workplace issues that affect job performance,
management and behavior. Counseling is only one of many skills needed
in a full service EAP. Just as handing out aspirins doesn’t make
you a doctor; a counseling degree doesn’t make you an EA Professional.
- A quality EAP should work in partnership with your organization to
provide a range of customized employee assistance services, including
at least the twelve basic services.
- Results clearly demonstrate that employers can cost-effectively address
workplace substance abuse and behavior issues by establishing an EAP.
Choose an EAP wisely, and you will not just increase productivity,
but drive down healthcare costs, increase worker safety, and improve
competitiveness.
